Oktoberfest

    The Annual German-Acadian Coast Historical and Genealogical Society Oktoberfest takes place on the 4th week of October each year in place of the monthly meeting.  The evening begins at 6 PM with a social hour where members and their guests can mingle with one another.  At 7 PM, the President will make a few opening comments and dinner is served.  At this time the featured Guest Speaker will make a presentation.

President Maurin gave a "Welcome" to everyone in attendance and recounted numerous statistics and accomplishments regarding the 25 years of GACHGS history.  She then called upon distinguished member, Al Robichaux to give the blessing.

 


Past President and Guest Speaker, Norman J. Marmillion who gave a touching speech on "Surviving in a Rootless World" and how the GACHGS has done just that in the past in 25 years.  Norman reminded us that our Society does much in the preservation of our culture, history and genealogy although at times, we may not be aware of the importance of what we do, generations to come will greatly benefit from our dedication.

The 23rd Year of the German-Acadian Coast Historical Society was celebrated at the Annual Oktoberfest dinner held October 22nd at Bull's Corner Restaurant in LaPlace.  The Meeting was called to order by President Gloria Maurin at 7 PM, at which time orders were taken for dinner.  At 7:10 PM, Mr. Warren Louque led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, which was precede by a patriotic reading of "I Am Your Flag" as a tribute to Veterans, Policemen, Fireman, and Servicemen worldwide.  At 7:15 PM Mrs. Maurin officially welcomed everyone and reminded us that is the 280th anniversary of our ancestors arriving on the Coast at this time, Vice-President Raoul Laurent gave the Invocation and led us in prayer by reciting the Blessing Before Meals.  At that time salad and later dinner were served.  At 8:15 PM Mrs. Maurin gave a review of the year 2002 and gave a "State of the Society" address.  She called upon, GACHGS.COM webmaster, Jay Schexnaydre, to give a brief overview of the newly created website.  At 8:30 PM, Mr. Emory Webre gave the presentation regarding Sacred Heart Convent, located in the town named after it Convent, Louisiana in St. James Parish.  The presentation was extremely informative and a delightful, surprising look into our ancestors lives and a vital historical aspect of our German-Acadian Coast History.  At 9:15 PM the Raffle was held in which member Suzette Goodrow received the grand-prize Lace Scarf.  Numerous door prizes were also distributed.
