Oktoberfest Dinner was held at La Maison
Magnolia on Wednesday, October 26. It is always great to renew old
acquaintance and visit with friends. As usual in Norco, the food
was delicious. Our guest speaker is Ron Thibodeaux of the New
Orleans Times-Picayune who recounted his experiences in Nova Scotia at the
2004 Congrès Mondial Acadien. See Oktoberfest section for
pictures.
Fay Walker Louque
It is with regret that we announce the death
of our founding President Mrs. Fay Walker Louque. She died
peacefully in her sleep 6:30 a.m. September 15, 2008. Fay had
heart problems for the past few years but the last few months had been a
struggle for her. A long time librarian in St. Charles Parish, she was a
pioneer in the Louisiana genealogical community! Her knowledge of our local
history was
matched by few and her willingness to help others will never be forgotten.
Services will be Thurs, Sept. 18 from 6 to 9 pm and on Friday, the 19th from 9
to 11 am with Mass at St. Charles Borromeo (Destrehan) at
11:00 a.m.
May the Soul of Fay and all the faithfully departed R.I.P. Amen.

March Meeting Held
The GACHGS would like to thank Mr. Ken Guidry
who spoke at our March meeting on behalf of the late Mrs. Emily C. Guidry.
Emily was preparing to give a presentation on the history of her beloved
Lutcher. Emily passed away in April of last year, so Ken was able
to gather the glass slide negatives which have been digitally converted.
Along with other photographs and sound bytes Ken entertained all there.
Afterwards he had some display boards of Emily's efforts. (Ken at right)
February Meeting Held
Those in attendance received a sneak preview of the new 1980--2005 Name index
for Les Voyageurs. We thank member Larry Torres for submitting the
index. The letter "A" has been posted to the website, and
webmaster, Jay Schexnaydre, presented this new feature to the website at the
meeting. Afterwards, Jay showed a few interesting websites and
members watched some genealogy "TV" shows on the RootsTelevision website.

January Meeting Held
A
good turnout of members (at right), new and old like, arrived for our first
GACHGS meeting of 2008. The evening's guest speaker was Mr. Kevin
Allemand (at left). Those in attendance were given a brief and
enthusiastic overview of the Archives of the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese which
encompasses 39 church parishes primarily in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes,
also Grand Isle in Jefferson Parish, Stephensville in St. Martin Parish and
Morgan City & Amelia in St. Mary Parish. Several lucky people were
awarded door prizes by Mr. Allemand which included a pictorial history of the
Diocese encompassing all parishes and a biography of Bishop Boudreaux.
Mr. Allemand encouraged members to visit his archives located at 205 Audubon
Avenue in Thibodaux on the periphery of the Nicholls State University campus.

September Meeting Held
Our
September meeting was held with a large attendance of members and guest who
came to hear the speaker Mrs Jane Bodde who gave us a rather different
perspective of Evergreen Plantation in Wallace. Her focus was not about
the building itself, but rather those that owned the plantation both past &
present. She began with the current owners and then went backwards to
the period when Songys, Becnels and firstly Haydels owned the property.
